GHOST NET x DENIM CARE
What is ghost net and what does it have to do with denim?
Ghost net refers to fishing nets that have been lost or abandoned in the ocean. These nets cause significant disruption in the marine environment as they drift along with currents, trapping all kinds of marine life in their paths.
Fish, sea turtles, dolphins, coral reefs, and even birds can become entangled in these nets, leading to injuries and often death, especially for mammals that need to reach the surface for air. Hundreds of animals can get caught in a single net, causing serious harm to marine wildlife.
Plastic compounds break down to smaller pieces, known as microplastics.
Nets made from nylon or other plastic compounds never dissolve. Instead, they break down into smaller plastic pieces, known as microplastics, which are ingested by marine animals, affecting their overall health. These microplastics then move up the food chain, impacting larger ecosystems.
Studies have revealed that ghost nets make up more than 46% of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, the largest accumulation of plastic in the open ocean.
Clearly, action needs to be taken. But what does this have to do with denim and Denim Care?
On one hand: nothing, really.
On the other hand: everything.
"Our vision is to enable denim to last a lifetime."
Denim Care was born out of a vision to care for already produced denim—a fabric many of us love deeply. Denim requires significant resources to produce, making it essential to extend its lifespan. Our vision is to enable denim to last a lifetime, thereby reducing the environmental footprint of the industry. If we can achieve this while also making the ocean safer for marine life, that’s a win we’ll gladly take.
